Description
For Portfolio 4, ArtThrob asked a select group of young contemporary South African artists to make a limited edition print. Each artist worked with a printer of their choice to produce an edition of 25, with the first 10 prints available in an exclusive collector’s portfolio.
All works are sized 50.5 x 66.5 cm. The portfolio is presented in an archival linen box, with each print made to the highest quality, exclusively for the Editions for ArtThrob programme. The prints in the portfolio include the following:
Georgina Gratrix Flowers for I.G. produced with printmaker Sara-Aimee Verity and Zhané Warren of Warren Editions in Cape Town. Remarkably for a silkscreen, Verity has succeeded in preserving the particular detail of Gratrix’s gestural marks made predominantly in lithographic crayon.
Athi-Patra Ruga …elipsis in three parts in which Ruga activated his own body as both image matrix and printing press in a three-part performance that saw the live creation of the print within a gallery context. This print edition is thus the trace of a live performance with each print a unique image.
James Webb You, the Collector is a rarely seen paper multiple produced in the path of Hurricane Irene at Dieu Donne Papermill in Hells Kitchen, New York City by Genevieve Wood. Embedded in the paper is a traditional relief watermark.
Dineo Seshee Bopape Chat-Scat was printed at Caversham Press by Malcolm Christian and assisted by Alex Shabalala in KwaZulu-Natal where Bopape worked in residence.
Cameron Platter Sex Slaves engaged Cameron’s process of digital collage via a translation into silkscreen with a very richly inked, high-gloss finish in the final print.
