The Freedom Charter T-shirt
In honour of Sue’s retrospective, ArtThrob have recreated a limited number of the iconic Freedom Charter T-shirts. Originally created in 1986 by Sue Williamson and Bruce Gordon, these shirts were an act of protest at a time when the Freedom Charter was banned by the apartheid government. By screen-printing the text onto T-shirts and posters, they were able to get the message out to public spaces.
One of the original Freedom Charter T-shirts is now part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). These are available online as well is at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair at R500.
