A Public Art Event – End of Summer Neighborhood Gathering

LOT on the CORNER OF GREATMORE AND YORK STREETS
7925 WOODSTOCK, CAPE TOWN

HOSTED BY ALMA MARTHA – a Cape Town artists’ collective platform interactive network etc etc etc.

AN EMPTY LOT, WE LIKE A LOT, WITH SOME ARTWORKS THAT ARE A LOT OR HAVE A LOT #bringyourownsweatshirt

We are not seeking to dull edges, to be a clean up crew or make places accessible, even though we do seek to access you as an audience. We are not seeking to transform renew or uplift a place, just maybe the viewer or participant for a moment; a gesture. With this exhibition we want to invite people into an empty lot; a useless lot, an exhibition lot, a vacant lot, a recreational lot, a dangerous lot, a safe lot; always depending. We hope to say hello through art works and engagement.

Some areas, in the urban environment are often avoided. Sometimes out of fear or repulsion and other times out of convenience. They are not useful in our daily routines or there is a sense that only certain people are welcome or allowed access. And there are spheres that are regularly occupied; because they are safe and welcoming, because they are useful in our daily routines.

When artists make artwork and put it in a public space, quite often (but not always) it is just about seeing the artwork in a bigger real life drawing. It becomes the fantasy and offers it a bigger, A LOT bigger stage to play on. It gives the artwork context and a presence that is real but through our fantasy of the artwork we change the environment to be our PLAY, our ART. It is just lucky that others can come and enjoy it. We hope you like it A LOT.
