“We are extremely excited to announce the launch of The Toffee Gallery; a contemporary art and project space in the beautiful Edwardian building on Long Street in Darling that houses Darling Sweet’s toffee factory.
This contemporary art project and exhibition space with its high ceilings and wooden floors will host an ongoing series of high-quality curated art exhibitions focusing on the work of artists at the forefront of contemporary art practice in South Africa. Exhibitions will be curated by both owner Hentie van der Merwe and guest curators that will be invited to curate shows of their choice.
We are launching The Toffee Gallery on 22 April at the opening of our first exhibition featuring the work of Robert Hodgins (1920-2010) and Michael Taylor (1979- ); two brilliant painters/printmakers from two very different generations in South Africa, albeit overlapping for some years. The exhibition will feature paintings, drawings, watercolors and prints by both artists. The show promises to create a captivating dialogue between the two artists, both dealing with similar themes of drama, irony, wit, camp, and in the work of both the ever present male body in all its guises of power, as well as its denuded vulnerabilities.”
Exhibition opening: 22 April 2017, 16h00
Exhibition will run until Sunday 4 June
Address: 7A Long Street, Darling, 7345
Opening hours: Mon-Sat: 08h00-17h00, Sun 10h00-14h00
