Ukrainian Women Artists Join South African Activists in Calling for Mutual Understanding of War’s Impact
The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation and Ukrainian Association of South Africa are bringing a specially curated exhibition, The Womanly Face of War, to cities across South Africa, as part of a landmark collaboration by Ukrainian artists and South Africa civil society to improve public understanding of the impact of the war in Ukraine, particularly on women and children. Curated by leading members of Ukrainian women-led artist collective Sunseed Art, and timed to coincide with Women’s Month across South Africa, The Womanly Face of War is based on four female artists’ personal perspectives of how the Russian invasion of Ukraine has impacted on women and girls. The exhibition will be free and open to the public at:
- ● The Trevor Huddleston CR Memorial Centre in Sophiatown, Johannesburg (12-16
August, 9:00-17:00 daily) - ● The Desmond and Leah Tutu Museum in Cape Town (19-25 August, 9:30-15:30 daily)
- ● Durban in early September (exact date and location TBC).

Four photographers selected for Re-presenting the Archive project
Re-presenting the Archive is a collaboration between Magnum Photos and the Visual Arts Network South Africa (VANSA). Curator Dr Mark Sealy (Autograph) has worked within the historic Magnum Photos archive to curate a body of photographs & unpack various narratives of African culture & diaspora in an attempt to reveal alternative, lesser-known, lesser-seen moments of the African continent’s history. Haneem Christian, Tshepiso Mazibuko, Litha Kanda and Tshepiso Mabula ka Ndongeni will create work in dialogue with this archive under the mentorship of Magnum nominee Lindokuhle Sobekwa and South African curator Candice Jansen.
