A Farewell to our Editor Matthew Blackman

A story by

Chad Rossouw

on the 22nd of September 2015. This should take you < 1 minute to read.

Our editor, Matthew Blackman, is heading off to do a PhD at the University of East Anglia in the UK. He will greatly missed at ArtThrob for his wit, intelligence and stubbornness. Here is a selection of Matthew’s writing from his time at the helm:

Never afraid of controversy, or calling out problems when others are silent, Blackman investigated the corruption around Venice. He voiced his worries about the Zeitz MOCAA in an open letter, and criticised the short-sighted processes of public art procurement in Cape Town. Blackman is also a skilled interviewer, here he talks to Okwui Enwezor about the ‘Rise and Fall of Apartheid.’

Blackman produced too much excellent criticism to list here, but some of my own favourites are his analysis of Zander Blom’s aesthetics, his contemplation on memory, his review of Kiluanji Kia Henda’s Concrete Affection and his thoughts on Ernest Mancoba.

We wish you luck Matthew.

Matthew is being replaced at the helm by a team of myself and Tim Leibbrandt.
