Our July/August showcase highlights the medium of Photography in four of our exhibition spaces. With a magic Stop Frame Animation video, a giant Camera Obscura, and Photography in many of its facets, we welcome you to a travelling through of human emotions, connections and history.


 

Photo Focus 2017
AVA annual in-house production high-lighting a specific medium: Photography.Main Gallery

Photo Focus 2017 comprises a limited edition portfolio of South African champion photographers, a large-scale exhibition including an experiential movement installation – a giant camera obscura, workshops, lectures, talks and the Cape Town premiere of Promises and Lies: Fault-lines in the ANC, further unpacking Photography from a multitude of perspectives.

Vahombe: Vanobuda Mumvura Vachikwira Kumakore is a series of photographs that merge skyscapes with historical images of the leaders of the First Chimurenga in Zimbabwe. “The exhibition is a tribute to the fallen heroes such as Nehanda, Kaguvi, Mukwati among others” – Dondo

Ross Culverwell
Process of Wonder
Media Room

A documentation of process in dealing with the grief of his brother’s death. “I make my work often subconsciously, from my own personal introspective experiences and psychology, dealing with loss, doubt, failure and other emotions.” Creating from that place, Culverwell used Stop Motion Animation and painting.
