We are sad to share the news that Andrew Da Conceicao, one of the founding directors of Stevenson, has passed away. Da Conceicao was formerly the curator of Art b (aka the Arts Association of Bellville). Inspired by a trip to Documenta 11, Stevenson and Da Conceicao opened a three-room space in a renovated industrial building in De Waterkant in 2003. For the past twenty years, they have produced a series of widely acclaimed solo and group exhibitions. Representing some of South Africa’s foremost contemporary artists as well as outstanding artists from abroad, the gallery now has spaces in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Amsterdam. In addition to his role as director, Da Conceicao has contributed to the arts ecosystem as a teacher, mentor and friend. A kind and generous supporter of the arts, with the most infectious laugh in the business, he will be sorely missed. ArtThrob extends our condolences to his friends and family.
A memorial will be held at Stevenson Cape Town, on Friday 4 August, 11am to 1pm. Donations in lieu of flowers to Pride Shelter Trust: info@pridesheltertrust.org.za
