Kahlo, Sher-Gil and Stern at JCAF
The Joburg Contemporary Art Foundation is soon to open Modern Identities of the Global South, an exhibition of work from three Modernist women, Frida Kahlo, Amrita Sher-Gil and Irma Stern. This marks the first time that the public will be able to see a Frida Kahlo in South Africa. This is the third and final exhibition that concludes JCAF’s first research theme Female Identities in the Global South. The exhibition dates are 25 October 2022 – 22 February 2023. Bookings can be made on the JCAF website. Exhibition viewing is by appointment only, but entrance to JCAF is free to the public.
Goodman, Stevenson, blank at Frieze London
Frieze London and Frieze Masters will take place from 12 to 16 October in The Regent’s Park, bringing together galleries from 42 countries, including three from South Africa. blank will be showing work by Igshaan Adams, Robert Burnier, Jared Ginsburg, donna Kukama, Sabelo Mlangeni, Gregory Olympio, Zoë Paul and Kemang Wa Lehulere. Stevenson has Neo Matloga, Zanele Muholi, Mame-Diarra Niang, Deborah Poynton, Zander Blom, Ruth Ige, Penny Siopis, Ian Grose, Serge Alain Nitegeka, Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi, Shine Shivan, Cian-Yu Bai and Frida Orupabo on the docket. Goodman will be presenting works by Ghada Amer, El Anatsui, Kudzanai Chiurai, Leonardo Drew, Reza Farkhondeh & Ghada Amer, David Goldblatt, Dor Guez, Nicholas Hlobo, Alfredo Jaar, Samson Kambalu, William Kentridge Grada Kilomba, Cassi Namoda, Shirin Neshat, Sam Nhlengethwa, ruby onyinyechi amanze, Ravelle Pillay, Zineb Sedira, Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, Mikhael Subotzky and Sue Williamson. AVA to elect new board members
The Association of Visual Art’s AGM takes place on Wednesday 12 October 2022, at 6pm. Invited speakers Virginia MacKenny and Igshaan Adams will be in conversation with AVA’s vice chair person Boitumelo Tlhoaele to unpack the 59th Biennale di Venezia. All paid-up members are invited to vote to elect new board members. Nominated this year are: Phokeng Setai, Winnie Sze, Olga Speakes, Oliver Nurock, Ina Voloshin and Keely Shinners. Everyone is welcome, but only paid-up members may vote. Refreshments will be served, compliments of Spier.
