Portfolio 2: Slices of history
ArtThrob regularly releases portfolios, which are collections of our prints, all with the same edition number bundled together. This particular portfolio released in the late 2000s contains work by significant South African artists making iconic bodies of work in this time period. While each work is dense, the uniting theme is the effects of the past on the present.
Portfolio 2 contains a classic photomontage by Jane Alexander, two images from Lolo Veleko’s series of street portraits, an image from Guy Tillim’s investigation of Jo’burg, a portrait from Mikhael Subotzky’s series from Pollsmoor prison and an etching from Penny Siopis in characteristic pink.
Music, History and Ruin
This limited offer consists of Siemon Allen’s Damaged Archive (Soweto) and Kemang Wa Lehulere’s Unknown Poem. Kemang Wa Lehulere’s work is concerned with the intersection between personal biography and collective history, often rendered in materials that have open association to networks of ideas. This print Unknown Poem reveals some of Wa Lehulere’s recurring themes music, pencils and a poetic sense of tragedy. Siemon Allen has an unparalleled collection of South African audio documents, particularly of music recorded on vinyl. These records are photographed and live as a visual record of the collection. Damaged Archive (Soweto) is from a series of records that visibly show the effects of time, in this case a record by mbaqanga singer Mahlathini.
